Woodside Flour Mills
SUNDAY
A dull morning and, after a quick coffee, I headed out on a run down the valley. I ended up doing 18 km, many along the Calder and Hebble Navigation and then it was a 2 km uphill slog back home.
I was ready for a shower and breakfast when I got back.
Along the Calder and Hebble Navigation waterway lies the crumbling remains of the 19th century Woodside Flour Mill. The company employed around 70 workers and produced 33 types of flour, using the waterway to transport their product into Halifax and Brighouse. At five storeys high it was the largest flour mill in Yorkshire. The arrival of the railway and the demise of canals as a method for transportation of goods led to the mill being vacated in the 1930s. All that stands now is a ruined shell of the former flour mill at the side of the canal. (see extra - looking the other way).
