When the bannister was taken off the wall we realised that the brackets had been painted over and were white enamel underneath.  I have spent an inordinate length of time cleaning the old paint off.  As it was just emulsion I was able to soak them and then scrape them clean.  They will hardly be seen when back in place but I think it was worth the effort (and it has given me a blip!)
