St. Rose Arveson
While in Colorado Springs, I visited the Garden of the Gods. While the pictures you could take from this park are amazing, what really caught my attention was this little shrine on a side street near the exit. Hidden among some scraggly trees was a metal arch proclaiming the "St. Rose E. Arveson Shrine". Intrigued, I wandered up the path, past crumbling statues of Jesus, decaying bird baths, and even what looked like a dog house, to the shrine in this picture. I had to Google who Rose Arveson was-- apparently her daughters petitioned to have their mother recognized as a saint on the premise of miracles she performed, but the petition was denied by the Vatican so they built their own shrine. It was in such decay, and the daughters have apparently died or disappeared, so I do wonder how long it will be before the shire totally decays, or someone takes it down...
