The Morris 8
Firstly I did not take this photo today. The car has been in storage since the onset of Covid 19 but I am about to put it back on the road. The photo was taken outside the chapel at
St. Andrew's Collage where I taught for 33 years.
This is our 1938 Morris 8. It was purchased new here in Christchurch for £120 10/- in May 1938 by its first owner.
I purchased it in running condition for $1500 in 1981 and restored it back to original colours in 1996. It has travelled only 129 000 miles in nearly 84 years.
The car is a lot of fun as long as you are not in a hurry. It cruises comfortably at 45 mph but these days other drivers are rather intolerant of slow traffic. It has been used as a wedding car 5 times. Both of our daughters chose it in preference over our modern BMW's.
I constantly get engaged in conversations with older people who learned to drive in one of these. This is a great pleasure for me as it brings back great memories for them.
