We're assuming it's there to stop theft - either of beasts or machinery. This must be considered a vulnerable exit from the farm - so the easiest way to make it safe is to block it with something heavy ;) 
Taken on our quick trot round the block this aft - we were going to go a bit further afield this morning, but had notification of a parcel delivery instead...
