Nina
I had a look online for information on Ilha de Moçambique’s now closed Cine Teatro Nina. Apparently it was built on the site of three sixteenth century warehouses, had its heyday in the 1970s and functioned until 1998. Another source says it’s now being used to dry fish, and it appears that plants are still being tended by the entrance doors.
In brighter news for Ilha’s cinema world, in recent years a local resident has brought the Maputo African Film week to the island and used other venues to show movies, with funding secured for this to be repeated. Nina’s legacy lives on, in one way or another.
