Carlos Trower

Today we went for a walk by one of our favourite lakes, Rudyard Lake. This figure, carved out of an old oak tree, is about 12 feet high. It is of Carlos Trower, an African American tightrope walker. In 1864 he was engaged by the North Staffordshire Railway to walk across the lake, around 100 feet in the air, as a publicity event. Over 3000 spectators attended.
