Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel exhibition
Friday
This morning we drove up to Dayton to see a special exhibition featuring the art of Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel. It was actually located in a shopping mall, which we found easily enough, but nowhere in the information online did it say which entrance to use, or exactly where in the mall it was located! Predictably, I think we parked about as far away as we could! We were a bit late for our allotted time, but it wasn’t particularly busy it didn’t really matter. The paintings from the ceiling, plus his painting of the Last Judgement on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel have been reproduced using a special printing technique that emulates the look and feel of the original paintings. We have visited the Sistine Chapel, but the paintings are so high up, you can’t appreciate the detail, and then you are surrounded by hordes of other tourists, and of course you can’t take photographs, legally at any rate, but that doesn’t stop some people trying to sneak photos with their mobile phones! So through this exhibition, you are given a chance to engage with the artwork in a way never before possible, seeing the artwork up close and life size, observing every detail, every brushstroke, and every color of the artist’s 34 frescoes. Each image is accompanied by informative signage, and audio guides were available to rent for an even more in-depth experience. It was a great experience, and we were so glad we had gone.
