FROM SEVENTH HEAVEN TO DVD
Located in Ilkley, West Yorkshire. The New Cinema was opened on 21st May 1928 with Janet Gaynor in “Seventh Heaven”. Designed by architectural firm Chadwick & Watson of Leeds, it had a white faïence façade. It had a 36 feet wide proscenium and a 9 feet feet stage. It was equipped with a 2 Manual Fitton & Haley organ, which was opened by organist Harry Packard. There was a café and a dance hall attached. On 19th January 1931 the organ was enlarged and was re-opened by organist Henry Croudson.
It was taken over by the Newcastle based Essoldo Group in March 1949, and re-named Essoldo. It was closed on 16th September 1969.
Boyes moved onto the site in 2010 when the towns only department store closed, another bit of Ilkley history.
