WITH A SONG IN MY HEART

By lizzie_birkett

Criss Cross Sky…

…with a tiny half moon.
These are the three streets of terraced houses and our street is the one at the front.
It was a beautiful blue sky, sunny day but still really cold.
I spent the day doing small drawings for Febcreate and wasn’t really happy with what I did but it’s all a learning process. The prompts are a bit out of my comfort zone - mostly insects, birds and animals. My comfort zone is people. It was relaxing anyway.
Spent an hour on the phone with Sue. She is no nearer to getting her hip surgery. Also her blood sugars are on the high side and her kidney function is poor. The diabetic Dr told her to eat more meat - she’s been trying to be vegetarian. Yet with the kidney problem she should be on a low protein diet, she doesn’t know what to do for the best. When Sue and I chat we always get onto the subject of our childhood - hence the poem.

That House (In Ellesmere Port)

Remember that house when we were kids
With a leak in the kitchen ceiling?
Our bedroom had ‘Alice’ wallpaper
And I always had that feeling
That a scary giant hid under my bed
Which really didn’t make sense
He would be too big not to stick out
But I was only 5, in my defence
We played space rocket on the stairs
They were, dark and steep and narrow
My job was to check the take off list
And count down from ten to zero.
D’you remember our den in the shed
And Mum brought us biscuits and pop?
We pretended to be The Secret Seven
Or played school or sweetie shop
The houses were in a big oval
With front gardens and a path all round
There we could safely play our games
It was the perfect playground
Mum made a tent with her clothes maid
Draped over with a great big sheet
We invited our friends in to camp with us
And in there we would share our sweets
Those happy days of childhood
When families had to be thrifty
Are never far from my thoughts
 A kid’s life in the nineteen-fifties.

I gave ballet and tap a miss tonight. I’ve had earache and headaches on and off for over a week - not migraines - just niggly ones.

Settling down now to watch Ghosts ( BBC) and then Around the World in 80 days.
Must get my Jim-jams on now.

Goodnight Blippers ;-)X
