1860

Biggar Corn Exchange was built in 1860 at a time when agriculture was coming of age following the Industrial Revolution.

Bustling city Corn Exchanges in Glasgow and Edinburgh at this time may have been the incentive for country towns like Biggar to try and outsmart their city rivals. The Burgh invested in a grand building to attract city traders to the country.

Grain trading never really took off at the Biggar Exchange and the building was converted to be used for civic purposes and that continues to this day.
