Laundress Lane is a narrow passage linking Silver Street and Mill Lane. It gained it's name because it leads to Laundress Green which was a drying ground for the university laundresses and local washerwomen who took their laundry to the river.
The notice on the wall says :- No Thoroughfare for Carriages or Horses, and is signed on the 24th March 1857.
