Looking a-rand
Johannesburg trips usually involve substantial time inside a mall, doing things that are harder to do in Mozambique. After a week of barely eating, whilst motoring around the mall, I had to buy 100 rand of biltong and eat it, and to hell with the consequences. It was orgasmic.
Johannesburg takes some orientation. It’s an endless succession of districts and suburbs, but is known as a dynamic powerhouse. It has an energy that is exciting.
This is the Anglo-Boer War Memorial in the suburb of Saxonwold. It was originally erected to commemorate British losses in the war but in 1999, in the post-apartheid spirit of reconciliation in that decade, it was renamed to commemorate all soldiers of any race and nation lost during the war.
