Taboo
In 1985 designer and artist Leigh Bowery opened a nightclub in London called Taboo. At the height of the New Romantic era, Boy George was amongst the legends that partied there. In the early 2000s, Boy George was co-creator of the Taboo musical which told the story of the time and the lasting influence of that generation on music and culture. I saw the original West End production of Taboo in the small theatre just off Leicester Square. Late last week I noticed Declan Bennett, one of the original cast members, tweeted
"I can’t believe it’s been 20 years. This Sunday 30/Mon 31st we bring it all back. The Palladium has never been this filthy. Bring your Zips Whips Clips and Chains See you there Freaks #EVERYTHINGTABOO"
And immediately set off to book some tickets for tonight’s show at The London Palladium. It was all very last minute but we managed to secure decent seats. It seems tonight, the second night, was added later and I just happened in at the right moment. The evening was billed as a charity concert but it was more than just singers and songs: you did have to keep up with the returning performers because some roles were played by several ex-cast members and much of it acted out albeit without the most elaborate set. It was brilliant and all in aid of a worthy cause with a crowd that just loved it.
Another late night out meant another kebab when we got home. The diet seems to be falling apart at the moment.
