Iceland - Day 4
The weather changed today, it was low cloud and snowing all day, so a good day for travelling to our next destination. We did not get out for the sunrise (there wasn't one!) and therefore had a later start. After breakfast we checked out and headed off to Höfn (pronounced Hoop) which is where we are to be based for the next 2 nights. It was not a far distance to travel but we stopped along the way taking photos of the iconic telegraph poles you see all over the landscape. We also stopped to photograph some wild Icelandic ponies, they really are resilient creatures living outside in such extreme cold weather (first extra). We also found some little houses like the yellow one in my extra.
When we got to Höfn we went to a cafe for lunch, then went to the hotel to check in. We did want to stay at the other Fosshotel in the area but it has not reopened yet after Covid, so we are staying at the Höfn Hotel instead, which is rather basic but fine. Once we had dumped all our bags we headed out to go to see Vestrahorn. It was now snowing heavily and I did not think we would be able to do any photography, but luckily the snowfall lessened and we spent all afternoon photographing the well known Vestrahorn mountain, and the black volcanic beach of the Stokksnes peninsula. The snow over the black sand dunes was quite a sight, and so this is my blip for today. It got very cold and so we left at about 5.30pm to return to the hotel.
It was a much easier day today and not so tiring. It was Valentine's Day after all! I hope you remembered to spoil your Valentine - I found a card in my suitcase this morning (and Gavin had a card left by me for him).
Tomorrow the weather looks to be very bad with heavy snowfall and rain - we will see how it turns out when we wake up in the morning.
Once again thank you so much for all the hearts and kind comments, the ice cave image seems to be well liked.
