The Drinking Fountains of Torquay . Meadfoot
The lecture at Torquay Museum today was on
‘The Drinking Fountains of Torquay’ by David Hinchcliffe. The story of the forty four drinking fountains in the town, dating from 1858 was linked to the temperance movement, and supported by many rich and influential people. These fountains varied in design, but most were fairly ornate. Over half have been lost. The rest are still in place but are not in any kind of working order. Only the outline remains in most cases- see extra of a free standing fountain at Daddyhole Plain.(1879)
The main photo is a fountain at Meadfoot, where water was once bottled by the Corporation and sold throughout the country. It was once compared to Evian water.
At the risk of sounding like a nerd it was a fascinating talk, which provided a great subject for blipping, following directions in the book on the subject.
