Stratford upon Avon, home of William Shakespeare

Yesterday was dry and winter warm; friend S and l headed off to Stratford upon Avon which was about 20 miles away. What defines this town, other than William Shakespeare, is the river Avon which runs along the outskirts with pretty stone bridges straddling it. The famous theatre sits on the banks just where this photo was taken and to my mind is one of the ugliest buildings.

This is a town that would normally be thronging with tourists but not so at present, S & l wandered around quite freely without queues. Some of the back streets are quite pretty with lots of beautiful old homes that have been preserved from the days of William Shakespeare but the town centre is full of shops selling souvenirs and cream teas.

Weather wise: there are countrywide warnings out for wind, rain and snow and people are being advised not to travel unless necessary tomorrow as yet another storm, Eunice, rolls in . We travel back to London tomorrow but will just take our time. 1,000s of homes in Scotland and northern England are without power as a result of storm Dudley which hit on Tuesday.
