The Lone Tree, Malham Rakes

I woke early in the pub to dry but windy conditions and decided to head out and find the renowned lone tree on the limestone pavement.  That was relatively easy, but actually walking across the pavement, with its gaps was slightly more challenging (it wouldn't be good to twist an ankle by a misstep). I just love these opportunities, time to myself, just a few sheep around.

Back for a hearty Yorkshire breakfast then a walk to Janet's Foss and Gordale Scar where the water was cascading over the rocks.  We had the unusual sight of a man wading out into the pool below the waterfall at Janet's Foss, complete with three people filming him as he ducked under the water before breaking surface.  Not sure they had permission but despite wanting to take some photographs of the waterfall we decided to head on to the Scar and come back (there was no way he would still be there after exposing himself to the freezing water!). The wind was still strong, getting even stronger as the high walls of Gordale Scar funnelled the weather.

Afterwards we returned to the lone tree so that John could get some images and then we headed back to Settle.  We were due to stay an extra night but the amber warnings across England for Friday caused us to change our plans and return home before the worst of Storm Eunice hit and disrupted travel.

We had a lovely 24 hours with John and Debs and we're looking forward to further opportunities in the future.
