In Grandpa's Garden
My father-in-law is an avid gardener, and his garden is such a joy to walk through this time of year. The month of May is when you see how much his hard work and patience has paid off. My mother-in-law thinks May is the most beautiful month. I would feel the same way, too, if I had a yard of flowering trees as they do. As it is, October is my favorite month -- we have a yard full of maples.
Edit: This is a flowering dogwood tree, native to North America. There is an old legend I vaguely remember from my childhood Sunday-school days that the dogwood was used in the crucifixion and that now the flowers represent the cross (two short and two long petals), complete with rusty marks where the nails were.
