This image was created in memory of Professor Martin Haigh, who died recently. Without Martin this wooded hillside in South Wales would not exist. A small part of him is still there - in the form of blood, sweat and probably small amounts of skin, as many of us fought our way through the hawthorn, roses and brambles to measure the trees we'd planted during the previous couple of decades.
Many papers have been written about Martin's work on this hillside - a long-term study into self-sustainable planting methods on former opencast coal sites and spoil heaps.
