Legacy of Violence
An apt title for the day of the invasion of Ukraine.
Vikram and our friend Susanna hosted a dinner for our friend Carrie Elkins who is here to start the promotion of her book about the British Empire. It seeks to challenge the comforting notion that it was a largely benevolent institution. It’s also quite long so I haven’t read it yet, longer even than Lorna Doone which I have nearly finished.
I was in the office all day and jumped on the tube a bit late to get to said dinner, forgot to change trains and ended up way down the Northern line so had to tack back. It was a an interesting crowd, mainly journalists and historians, one ex cabinet minister as you often get in this household.
Late drive home arriving at 1am. I then realised I’d left my iPad in the office hence blip not posted on time.
