Finding My Bearings

By JustJuli

A trip down Memory Lane?

I was so happy to be back at the wonderful school I was at for a few weeks last year. They'd actually asked the agency if I could work for them on a long-term basis after Christmas but I'd already committed to my current school (which is also wonderful so it all still worked out well for me anyway).

It was so great to see everyone again today, including the students, who all remembered me (and my star post-it notes!). I'd often wondered how the lovely staff I'd met there were doing, especially the couple of cover supervisors who had been applying for teacher training places. I've often said what a small world education is and, true to form, one of them has got a School Direct training place at the same school I did my NQT year at! He's really chuffed as it's a great school and a brilliant opportunity.

I was in the Art Department most of the day, which is always fun, and it's amazing how talented the students are. The main topic of conversation between them, however, was the invasion of Ukraine. Considering that teenagers usually have absolutely no interest whatsoever in the news, even anything to do with covid, many of them were seriously worried the Russians were going to 'nuke' us. With unbelievable timing, a really loud military helicopter flew over us at one point (I don't make this up, I promise!) and they all ran to the window to see if this was, in fact, 'it'.
