Gun Barrel Roulette

I'm not sure if anyone else calls this section of the road back up to my house The Gun Barrel, but I do. Downhill traffic is supposed to give way to uphill, which doesn't always happen, usually because it's so hard to see into the gunbarrel from up at the top. As you can see, it's narrow, and there's only room for one car at a time. They had lights controlling traffic for a while, but the locals got sick of it - contrary lot us hill folk. Everyone's good natured about it though and I guess we're all very thankful that the road has remained open - phew :)

This road construction, or deconstruction, happened after the June 2011 quake, when a great deal of the hill ended up over the road; houses shifted and threatened to slide onto the road too. We had two weeks of driving out over the top of the hill, through a farm track that is only ever opened in emergencies - we had two weeks of emergency. The view from the top, coming down was stunning, out over Pegasus Bay - but two weeks was enough for most. Too hard on 2WD vehicles and some got stuck etc etc etc

For those interested in maps, I've put the marker at the top of the 'gun barrel', not where the photo was taken, because the marker got in the way!!

(Thanks Tussock! It's Clifton Hill)
