Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

Echoes of the past.

This broken cable emerging among the rocks on the shore at Peterhead is a remnant of an underwater telegraph cable that once connected the UK with Europe. On the 5th of June 1869, a telegraph cable connection was established between Russia and Norway and in August of the same year the Anglo‑Norwegian cable between Egersund and Peterhead telegraph station was taken into service.

It was here, in 1917, that the first news of the Russian Revolution reached Britain. Now, horrific images of the vile war being inflicted on Ukraine by Russia are beamed into our homes in real time.
