Lullaby

Time for Sleep, time to rest.
snuggle in your woolly nest.
Let me safely tuck you in,
Dark without, warm within.

Far away, train whistles call,
Car lights sweep the nursery wall,
Muffled footsteps passing by,
A quiet moon in a quiet sky.

Soft blanket, smooth sheet,
Tuck the quilt around your feet,
Close your eyes and I will keep
A watch beside you while you sleep.

shirley Hughes, 1927-2022

I just pick up the book and I’m back; cuddled in the corner of the sofa with a little warm Lump on my lap and the other tucked under my arm.

Shirley Hughes and Alfie and Annie Rose (and also Bernard) were great friends of ours while the children were young, and the words she wrote and the images she drew will stay in our hearts forever.
