Between a rock...
And a hard hike. My phone says D and I hiked 9.6 miles today. Not to shabby for a pair of 69 year olds!
We drove two hours to the trail head and in the mountains it was still about 40F. By the time we finished the hike it was 77F...and hot! We were thankful for every breeze that blew and it wasn’t much!
We began our hike at 9am and got back to the car at 3:45pm! We had many up and down hills which meant many stops for breathing exercises! We live in a much flatter area and lower elevation. It really makes a difference.
The trail started at the bridge over the Eastatoe River and then proceeded up and then down to the first of two swinging bridges. This bridge was very high over the water in my opinion and it took me a few minutes of talking myself into crossing it!
Not too much further we crossed the river again. The second bridge was not as long or as high but it was still swinging!
As we climbed back up we saw many huge boulders and were actually walking on the top of rocks. Sometimes the trail was narrow as it ran under the rock faces.. and dropped off on the tree side.
At the 4+ mile point we came to a different creek where we saw a small waterfall. It was wonderful to sit there on the rocks for lunch and to cool our feet in the water.. which was really cold. At this point we had only seen one other person hiking.
After a rest we started our return hike. There was much moaning and groaning as it was hot and the hills seemed to be steeper. We were REALLY happy to see the big bridge and the car.
We were proud of ourselves so when we stopped for a meal we had a big slice of cheesecake to celebrate. Since we burned so many calories walking we decided to replace them! It was excellent cheesecake!
A good day.. who knows if we will be able to move at all tomorrow!
A collage of the day in the extras!
