Taking tea in the Pump Room.
First visit to Leamington Spa in over 50 years and I can’t say that I remembered any of it. Had a coffee in the Pump Room and went to the little museum and read about the history of the spa. A mineral Spring was first recorded as far back as1480 but it wasn’t until the late 17th century that became widely known as a place to restore one’s health. The season for taking the waters lasted from May to October and patients were advised to drink the water and bathe in it. They also had to follow a diet which included plain meat, stale bread, sherry,, black tea and butter! The fashion for taking health cures declined and by the late 1800’s the spa baths closed.
