World Book Day
I bought this book just before the pandemic and was a welcoming read during the first lockdown. Written by Serhii Plokhy who gives a thickly detailed account on what happened not just on that very day but also how Ukraine was part of the Soviet empire before and after the disaster. Particularly their quest for democratic independence towards the end of the book. Fascinating how it has helped me understand the tensions that are going on (and become less panicked if that's the right word) right now in Eastern Europe between Ukraine and Russia.
The mug in question should have (hate Putin) on it! It was a souvenir we bought on a visit to to St Petersburg four years ago.
