Blue Lagoon
We had day 2 of the tour we did yesterday booked to do the South Coast to Vik. We waited for the bus and waited some more. When time was well past I checked the ticket on the net and eventually saw that it was a 9 o'clock start today. That's bl**** ridiculous because we'd booked a 10 o'clock tour. It was on there but we didn't expect it to be a different time. That was a nuisance but time for Plan B.
We went for a coffee and got in the big beast that's been waiting in the hotel garage for some action. We drove down the the Reykajanes peninsular. We stopped at the Blue Lagoon. You might think that it's a very expensive natural swimming pool but that's just part of it, the lava fields and pools that surround it are much more attractive to us as photographers. It's been a sunny day after a fresh fall of snow and when the sun came through the colours come out much more but all framed in the black lava. There are lots of walkways through and we spent a good hour or so there.
We drove on to Grindavik which is a small fishing town and found a cafe on the docks for lunch. It looked at first like it was being rebuilt and I was in the process of turning round when John noticed that it was open. It was a great little place. We had Icelandic hot dogs for lunch. They've become a bit of a trend it seems being quite different from the American hot dog, being made mostly from Icelandic lamb. Anyway, they're just right for lunch, not to filling so you still have appetite for an evening meal.
From there we went on to Reykjanes which is occupied by a gigantic geothermal power station. That's probably explains the strange sky in my second extra of the lighthouse. The first extra is Valahnúkamöl beach with big waves crashing in and loads of sea birds flying.
