Home Built
The other day the starlings' nest in the cabbage tree was blown down. It was much bigger than the house sparrows' nest, and would easily fill a 9 litre bucket. It was woven on a base of old cabbage tree leaves, which came down with it. I was interested in what it was made of. Here is a list of components I was able to identify-
cut hay
dried weeds
sheep's wool
moss
a variety of feathers from wild and domesticated birds
a lot of different scraps of polythene
non-woven weed matting
poly twine in different weights and colours
parcel strapping
shreds of glossy magazine
fabric scraps
tabs from a cigarette packet
part of a Mylar (tinsel) chip packet
a Mintie wrapper
