Aftermath
Where storms have ripped up roots
a stony hollow appears where the tree once stood.
Among the broken roots, someone has placed
a colourful stone, hand-painted,
designed to bring comfort and hope
in devastation.
It won't replant the tree that took years to grow,
but loss is softened by a human heart.
It is a vain response to shock. It says,
I care. I'm sad. I wish the tree had lived.
More storms will follow. They always do.
It is a vain response. But love shines through.
