Mine
I hope you can see the little white dot. I added an orange filter to make it stand out. We have been fighting for as long as I have been here, and some probably longer, against a copper mine a Canadian company and wants to dig on the eastern side of the scenic Santa Rita mountains. It’s been tied up in litigation for a variety of reasons, including waffling on the part of the EPA and the forest service. The good thing for us in the fight was that they wanted to create this open pit mine partially on forest service land.
While they have been fighting the litigation, they started exploring the west side of the mountains, within view of our town. They found copper deposits many times greater than their original mine. Now the problem is that it’s located on private property. Thanks to our previous president, EPA rules have been loosened in cases like this. So the blasting and building of infrastructure has begun. One of the most annoying things, other than having a mine screw up your view and make your property values plummet, is that they have giant lights going all night long (dot). Arizona has a law that prohibits that. It’s the “Dark Sky Law” and is extremely important for Arizona’s observatories. Explore the universe or explore a sensitive environment? Not even close!!
