Snakes Head Fritillary

There are plenty of early spring flowers in parks and gardens at the moment. Today I saw some snakes head fritillaries growing amongst the daffodils and crocuses. They look a bit like lanterns from which no light shines and little is reflected from their dark mantle. Their drooping form  gives them a rather sad and dejected appearance - or perhaps I am being a bit unfair.
