Bean trench
I'm taking a break from the finicky work of finishing the wood batons to prepare trenches along the bean tunnel with fresh kitchen waste.
Beans and squashes are hungry feeders so I never take any chances with them: I always fill a trench with fresh kitchen waste a couple of months before planting.
This year, I'll also be sowing a thin row of birdsfoot trefoil, a green manure that's a good companion crop for beans. And when I have a couple of buckets of manure, I'll add that as a top layer.
It was funny seeing a lot of worms when I started digging - this area has had a bit of manure in the autumn so it's not too bad as it is...
