St James with St Thomas, Poolstock.
Now that Wigan Council have revamped the junction near this lovely church, the view of it from Lock 1 on the Leigh Branch Canal is quite spectacular!
It’s a Gothic Revival style Anglican Church built in three years from local Parbold sandstone between 1863 and 1866.
It was paid for by a local mill owner and former MP, Nathaniel Eckersley, for whom the gardens in front and the pub next door were named.
The mill chimney just visible far right is Eckersley’s Mill.
