Yoiks ...

... is how one author describes the call of the Little Wattle Bird (D&M Trounson - OK, two authors). Other authors use raucous and guttural. Little Wattle Birds are large honeyeaters, common in Banksia woodland in SE Australia. I photographed this one in the bush behind Boulder Beach nearby. 

The name Wattle Bird has nothing to do with wattle plants (ie Acacia species). Instead, it refers to the fleshy caruncle hanging from various parts of the head or neck in several groups of birds and mammals (Wikipedia). Curiously, the Little Wattle Bird does not have wattles! I have renamed it the No Wattle Bird.
