Mother Dolphin and Calf
We spent the morning at Ft. Clinch, a fort that was built before the Civil War and abandoned afterward. In the afternoon we took a boat tour into the estuaries of Cumberland Island, Georgia (see location marker). Some of you may recognize this place as the very secluded island where JFK Jr. and Caroline Bessette had their secret wedding. The island is almost entirely part of the National Seashore and is accessible only by boat.
In the 1880's, the younger brother of Andrew Carnegie, his wife and nine children built a mansion on this island. Over the years it was added to and by the time it was finished it was 35,000 square feet. It burned down in 1959 with only the stone walls remaining. We were able to get just a glimpse of it from the boat. Camping by permit is allowed on the island and there is one Inn, which is run by a Carnegie descendent.
The boat trip was a real gem. We saw wild horses, white pelicans which are about twice the size of regular pelicans and the biggest thrill of all was to see a school of dolphins swimming right around our boat. The captain stopped and just let us enjoy them.
