The Cottar's House

Spotted at Auchindrain (Achadh an Droighinn, originally, meaning Field of the Blackthorn Tree). Now a museum, it is an example of a traditional joint tenancy farm township in Argyll, a settlement type common in Scotland until 200 years ago. A "cottar" was a specialist craft worker, e.g. weaver, stone-mason, fisherman, etc.), living in a settlement but outwith the joint tenancy organisation.
