A bastile house
We have many interesting historical buildings in Northumberland. Bastile houses were built to protect those living on the English/Scottish borders in the late 13th/early 17th centuries from border reivers: two storey building, people upstairs, precious animals downstairs, access by ladder to first storey which was pulled up by the occupants, very thick stone walls, very small windows or sometimes just arrow slots. They were built to last. This one is still used by a farmer for storage. I’m sorry it is a distant shot, the bastile house is on the right.
