But, then again . . . . .

The Monstrous Regiment.

The female army approaches, they look formidable don't they? Not to worry, Dixie, the intrepid Dachshund will defend us with her life - won't she? Perhaps, when it comes down to the wire, she will turn tail and run to hide behind our legs. In the end, she rolled over onto her back and exposed her tummy for them to rub.
Fickle bitch.

Some years ago I read the whole of Terry Pratchett's novel, "The Monstrous Regiment," before I realised that the title must a reference to something deeper - so I Googled it. I came up with references to militant females including the women's suffrage movement, but the original reference is to a polemic by John Knox entitled, "The first blast of the trumpet against the monstruous regiment of women," basing his premise, that there was no place for women in authority, on his interpretation of the bible.
The words "monstrous regiment" have changed their meaning (and spelling) since then from "unnatural government." His ire was aimed at Mary I of England, Mary of Guise and Mary, Queen of Scots.
Perhaps he just didn't like Marys.
