LET THEM EAT FISH
This morning we went on a tour of Brixham’s ‘World Famous’ Fish Market with the Torbay Civic Society. The market is run by the Brixham Trawler Agents. We missed the auction but that starts at 6am so it was a blessing. It was very interesting if you like fish. Trawlers using the port of Brixham land over 40 different species of fish. Some of them are seasonal and some are more plentiful than others. Some of the fish orders were waiting to be collected including these pollock - a top quality fish mainly caught in autumn through to spring by rod and line, or netted. Brixham is now England’s largest fish market by the value of fish sold. In 2017 this was in excess of £40 million. It cannot however compete with Scotland, particularly Peterhead. In the extra the boat coming in is Julie of Ladram, after a week at sea in the Western approaches of Cornwall. The boat will refuel before unloading the catch.Fish from the market ends up on plates in some of the finest restaurants in the UK. However, approximately 70% of the fish is exported to Europe-primarily Holland, France, Spain, and Italy.
Despite the cold on the viewing platform and inside in the refrigerated area it was well worth the visit. Thank you to Adam and Neil of the Brixham Trawler Agents for giving up their time.
