100 Oxford Street
Sandwiched now between Ann Summers and Boots, the 100 club on Oxford street has been playing live music since 1942. It started as a swing jazz club for American GIs and a shelter underground from the falling bombs - "forget the doodlebug, come and jitterbug!" - to dance the night away. It has been played by many great names over the years. Here are just a few: Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Ronnie Scott (of the eponymous jazz club in Brewer Street) in the early days; Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, BB King, Albert King, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Hendricks in the1960's; Sex Pistols, The Clash, Buzzcocks in the punk era; and more recently Semisonic, Muse, Shack have played gigs.
The Rolling Stones and Metallica have played unannounced at the 100 club to warm up before starting their world tours.
In 2010 it nearly came to a grinding halt until a campaign organised by musicians including Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger led to a partnership with Converse, part of Nike. Converse sneakers have been associated with rock and roll and basketball since the fifties.
Enjoy a sunnier Sunday!
