Orb weaver spider

These spiders are common. When you look at their distribution map they appear to be taking over the world. In our garden the brighter ones make their web quite high. Those who spin lower than M's head height will have to start again.

They like to trap flying insects as their prey. The description I read states that small birds can also be caught and eaten. Not a pleasant thought, but it's the nature of things.
