Wars past and present.
This is the interior of a brick and concrete pillbox built in 1941 on the dunes behind Newburgh beach to help hinder any landing by German forces. The pillbox is unusual in that the gun openings face inland rather than towards the beach from whence the Germans would arrive. The reason for this is that it was designed to protect a coastal gun battery against any attack from the rear by German troops who had managed to land and to infiltrate behind the beach.
Unusually, the interior fittings are still largely intact, including the protective steel shutters for the gun loops and their raising and lowering cables.
Extra. The yellow gorse and blue sky pay tribute to the brave Ukrainians.
