Old man: it's a great view isnt it. You should keep an eye on those two though. Kids like them wander off and cause trouble.

Me: yep it's a pretty good spot. The kids are grand, just having a rest.

Me inside: it's the worst view on the hill but i need to step away and create a re-set for us all. Breathe out frustration. Breathe in patience and empathy. And if those kids start wandering I will be thrilled and gladly follow them in any direction at this point.

We got going again in the end. 2 kids having a tough day. That's ok, we all have them.
A little slip and a few tears and suddenly they're talking.
About school, friend and home worries that when you're 13 and just did a pandemic feel pretty enormous.
Mostly listening, some reassurance and a plan for a step towards change if they want it.
Both young people coming to find me and thier guidance teacher next day (I'll admit, we weren't convinced they would!) to say yes, we'd like to try for some positive change.

Under all the fun stuff, this is why outdoor learning is important.
