Vatersay Bay

Today's the day .................... for those in peril

We didn't have to catch our next ferry until late afternoon - so today was a day to spend on Barra.

We have visited a few times before but we'd never been to the extreme southwest of it - to Vatersay.  Vatersay was the southernmost inhabited island in the Outer Hebrides but it is now linked to Barra by a causeway which was completed in 1991. The beach above is made of the finest Hebridean sand and stretches for miles.  It looks to be the most idyllic place but not far away at the west bay of Traigh Siar there is a monument to the 350 lives lost when the 'Annie Jane ' went down in the severe sea storm of 1853.  She was on her way from Liverpool to Canada where her passengers were all hoping to start better lives in a new country.

The extra is of the Barra Lifeboat, moored up in the harbour at Castlebay . . . .
