"Developing" Negatives

Long story but I've acquired a quantity of B&W negatives taken by a relative of whose existence I was unaware until some years after his death in 2008. To "develop" the negatives (enough to get an idea of their content), I'm photographing them on a light pad, and then flipping the tone curve in Lightroom or Photoshop.
