You place whatever fresh fruits and vegetables you want to purchase into one of them (some shoppers need more than one) and then take it to the attendants who weigh and charge. A very efficient system save for the old-line places that don't trust their workers with cash and make you pay at a separate station before allowing you to get your groceries.
