Tiny Tuesday - Axolotl
This little "salamander" is featured on the back of the new fifty peso note that was just recently awarded the 2021 Bank Note of the Year by the International Bank Note Society. This is on the heels of the 100 peso note winning the same award the prior year. The Axolotl is native to the lakes and waterways of Mexico, especially the "floating gardens" of Xochimilco seen behind him/her on the bank note. Unfortunately urbanization and the resulting water pollution of the lakes around the capital have driven this species to the brink of extinction in the wild.
