Nibbled?

DDW's April Challenge Day15 : Curious

This is a stone found on the beach. It is covered in small holes and pock marks. I wonder what made the holes. It has been suggested that it is some rock boring sea creature, but why would it do so?
I see similar stones fairly regularly and they make me curious...
